Chrysler Repair: 1993 Chrysler Minivan Fuel Filter, chrysler minivan, jumper wires

Question
Can you tell me where the Fuel Filter is and if it is easy to fix myself?

Thank you!

Answer
Hi Bruce,
If you have the front wheel only drive (not the all-wheel) then the filter is pretty visible. If you get under the rear of the van and look for the frame cross member that supports the rear of the gas tank, you will see it inserted into one of the fuel lines that runs across that member going to the right hand side of the van. There are two lines, one is a return line, but all you need to do is loosen the clamps on the fuel line, wrap a rag around the whole thing, then pull the lines off the nipples on each end of the filter. It may or may not help to unbolt the filter's strap from the  cross member when you are trying to remove the hoses (for access or for mechanical advantage), and in order to get the rag wrapped around it. The fuel system is under residual pressure, so you want to have it wrapped and not have gasoline squirt on you. Open the fuel tank filler cap and doorway to depressurize the tank proper before you start the job. You can depressurize the fuel lines too, but it depends upon which engine that you have as to how and where you disconnect the electrical plugs and use jumper wires to do that. If you let the engine rest for several hours before starting, and release the hoses one at a time slowly you should be able to capture the pressurized gas in a good size rag without going thru that depressurization process. But then again, gas is pretty expensive these days so you want to not waste it! In any case, the gas will not drain from the tank, just from the lines until the pressure is released.
