Classic/Antique Car Repair: 1958 Plymouth Fury, tire thump

Question
I own a completely restored 58 Plymouth Fury with only 64 miles since restoration.I have a slight bounce to the  car when driving. The front end is new,new brakes and drums and new Coker 14" wide white bias ply tires. My mechanic thinks it is the bias ply tires causing the problem, and I should get radial tires. The car is in storage 90% of the time.Would this problem disappear if the car is driven more or should I look at radial tires.Thanks.

Answer
Hello Gerard,

Mr. Forward Look, how much I'd love to have a car like yours!

I think your problem could be related to tires or rims also but don't think radial vs bias ply has much to do with it. Rather, I see two alternatives:

A) Are your tires nylon, bias plies? They are known to take a set from sitting and may thump on the first few miles, then smooth out. What to do in this case, live with it as a nature of the beast, or go to rayon or polyester bias or steel radials

B) What jumps to mind is an out of round condition, possible either at the tire or at the rim. Take your car to a reputable tire dealer and have him check the balance on one of these new electronic balance machines. A skilled operator can check roundness, wobble, etc. Do this on all four as this may sound strange, but sometimes out of balance in the back affects the front.

Best of Luck,

Bob
