Classic/Antique Car Repair: Leaking Dipstick Tube 57 Chevy Bel Air, 57 chevy bel air, chevy bel air

Question
hi
i have a 1957 chevy 210 4 door with a 283 v8 and a two speed powerglide transmission. my problem is the transmission fluid is leaking out of the dip stick tube. this dose not happen each time i drive the car, only sometimes. it will also lose fluid through the dipstick tube when the car has sat awhile and it gets hot outside, but not always.
other than that it runs and shifts fine. do you know what could be causing this?
                     thanks
I saw this question and pasted it but need to know where the vent is located and maybe the process.  Thanks

Answer
I'm confused by your question: Are you referring to some question that I answered previously? If so, can you give me the date so I can check back in my archives and see what it was all about?  I've done over 3000 Q&A's on this service, and I don't remember what I had for breakfast this morning, much less any previous questions.

If you are asking me why a transmission spits out fluid from the top of the dipstick tube, it is because pressure has built up inside the transmission.  There are two possible causes for this - one is contaminated transmission fluid, especially coolant in the fluid due to a leak in the cooler.  The other is a plugged vent. The vent is at the top of the transmission case, toward the rear of the case.

Pull out the dipstick and inspect the fluid, if it is clear and red, with no cloudy appearance, and doesn't smell burnt, your fluid is OK.

If there is something blocking the vent, you are probably going to have to take it to a transmission repair shop and have them find the cause.  Try to find a privately owned shop that has been in business for many years, not one of the national chains.
