Classic/Antique Car Repair: 62 Rambler Classic, vacuum gauge, ohv engine

Question
I have a 1962 rambler classic 196 ohv engine.

It runs good at idle.
When I hit the throttle I get about 1/3 toward full throttle and it starts smoking, missing, backfiring, and running horrible.

The compression in all cylinders is good.  I have a rebuilt carb.  All tune up parts have been replaced.  All other ignition parts have been tested. The timing is dead on.

I pulled the hose off the fuel pump and cranked the engine.  Tons of gas squirted about 6 feet in the air, so the fuel pump seems ok.  I replaced the fuel filter anyway.

The car supposedly ran great before it was parked 3 years ago.  I got it about 1 year ago for 200 bucks and it wasn't running.

Thanks for any help.

Answer
Just off the top off my head, it sounds like you are sucking oil up into the intake. Does it have a pcv or that era's equivilent?

Also, have you cleaned the gas tank? This is standard operating procedure for one that has set. You could have sludge that is only sucked up at higher speeds (but should not be self healing at lower rpm's )

Have you ran it at higher throttle with a vacuum gauge on it and seen what it reads?
