Classic/Antique Car Repair: VIN, rare occurrence, jams

Question
I recently purchased a 55 chevy 3100 series pu. It has been restored somewhat and I can't find where the vin is located at. I've looked in the door jams and under the hood on the firewall, but to no avail. Can you give me some idea of where to look for a vin on a vehicle that has had the tag removed from the door? Any help where to start looking would be appreciated.

Answer
Unfortunately, you are dealing with the problem that led to better VIN usage. This was the method used for 'chopping' a vehicle and no other I.D. was there. Occasionally, you will find a vehicle that a previous owner stamped the VIN in the frame right in front of the 'cab',  but that was just a rare occurrence. I had a 57 stolen and they removed the VIN and even though it was my car and I could identify everything about it, I was never able to re-establish that VIN number on that car.

The bright side is, it is not necessary to do so in order to own, drive and register the car, if you have the title.

Sorry.
