Classic/Antique Car Repair: High performance engine, carbarator, cadillac series

Question
I have a 1961 Cadillac Series 62 Coupe, It has a 300 (something) engine. (I'm clueless about it) I want to be able to "soup it up", and make it stronger to really be able to push the weight of the car with better ease. What can I do- short of installing a bigger (not original) engine? Also, how would I go about changing the original drum braking system to an upgraded 'disk' style system? I can only hope that you will have some knowledge about my questions as you are the only GM expert on this website. I'm also embarrassed to ask anyone in person because I'm not very well versed in the correct naming of parts in the engine etc. Please help if you can. I'm just a shade tree 'sorta' mechanic. Thanks in Advance.

Well as far as that motor , it has the power to pull that car, but you could do a engine over haul, like a valve job and new rings and bearings, etc.and a better carbarator would also help and you could replace the cam with a heavy duty one that would give you extra pep, as you do not want it to drink more gas than it is going to right.
The brakes , If you have a junk yard in your area , you can look and try to get the brake parts from there and than replace what is needed. I would go to the company ( JC Whitney.com ) tell them Roger Warrington told you and they should have every part or kit, etc. that you might need.
And do not worry about asking me for help, if I can help you , great,so check out the jc whitney co. and see what you might get and get back to me ok.
