Classic/Antique Car Repair: 1957 Bel Air - Positraction?, modern cars, turbo transmission

Question
Hi Daniel,
We bought a 1957 Bel Air 2-door Sedan that has a 350 engine / 400 turbo transmission in it. The previous owner did not change the back end at all - it's all original. Do you think it's a good idea to look into putting a positraction rear end on this car, or would it be OK to leave it as it is? We don't plan on racing the car, simply driving it around, so there shouldn't be too much stress placed on the rear, but my father-in-law says that changing out the rear end would complete the underside of the car, and give the back half more stability - especially with the more powerful engine. I understand positraction is pretty expensive, so we're kind of hesitant on doing it if it's not needed.

Thank you for your help!
Greg

Answer
Well, i think that this issue is more personal.

In my opinion, if you don´t want a Hot Rod and want to make a good restoration in order to keep the price of the car high, you have to leave the car as much original as you can. I don´t think that a rear end give more stability of this car because it has no stability at all, i mean that this cars were designed and made in the 50´s and there is a world of difference in issues like stability and track control with the modern cars.

Personaly, i drive the antique cars with no hurry and with no big stress situation, so i don´t need a special rear end, but if do you think that a positraction rear end will be great in your car, so buy it. (from now to on, prepare your pocket to spend a lot of money in your "baby....:))

ps: Nice car and nice engine.. it has a great sound.
