Classic/Antique Car Repair: windshield scratches, c r laurence company, windshield scratches

Question
Hello Dick, do you how to remove scratches and smears on the windshield caused by metal parts of the wiper blade as it sweeps back and forth? (I know, I should have replaced the blade sooner). Thanks.

Answer
Yes, you can do this yourself, but it is a little tricky, and requires some special stuff.  The other way is to take it to an autoglass place and get them to polish it out.

If you want do it yourself, you need to buy a tub of Cerium Oxide polishing compound, and the special very hard felt buffing wheel sold to use with it.  The wheel will fit your 1/4 drill motor.

Then you follow the directions very carefully, to avoid grooving your glass (which is worse than the scratch to see through!).   Basically, you make a paste of about peanut butter consistency, load the wheel and buff the scratch - being careful to go across the scratch not along it.  You also have to be very careful not to overheat the glass, as you can crack it.

It takes a LOT of buffing to get a scratch out, (like hours!) and if it is deep, you won't be able to get it out without rippling the glass.  If you can catch your fingernail in the scratch, it's too deep - save up for a new windshield!

To get the supplies, go to C.R.Laurence company.  Their web site is www.crlaurence.com

Been there, done that.

Dick.
