Ford Repair: are sohc and ohv engines interchangeable?, ohv engines, salvage yard

Question
i have a 1997 ford explorer with a sohc engine. i went to the salvage yard and bought a 1997 ford explorer engine but unfortunately it was an OHV. Well weeks went by until the mechanic could get to my car and told me he couldnt bolt it. I couldnt return the engine because it was past the the return policy date. Can I still use this engine? are SOHC and OHV engines interchangable? Is my mechanic right? Whats my best option?

Answer
hey there, unfortunatly both these engines are completly different, even if you wanted to change to the OHV it would require so much work that the truck would not even be worth repairing. How did your mechanic not notice the difference?????? they even look completly different. thats to bad you cant send it back.. but i would call the wreckers you got it from and complain. I dont see why they would have a problem giving you the proper motor in exchange for the one that hasnt even been intalled yet.. It depends on who's fault it was i guese, but to answer you question. they are interchangeable, BUT you will need to get a hold of many many other parts to get that to fit in and run properly,
good luck
