QUESTION: A shop did.  My question is could it be the tar convertor?

Answer
What shop, was it a placed called Cottman? Get a second opinion. As you can see in my profile, transmission is not my strong suit, but "I have never heard of this so called tar converter. Everything that I have found about a "tar converter" were people getting ripped off. Beware, although I may not be able to answer you're question at this point, I think this "shop" is wanting to take you for a long and expensive ride.
