Ford Repair: SERVICE ENGINE SOON LITE, obd scanner, taurus 3

Question
I HAVE REPLACED MY EGR VALVE, AND MY EGR POSITION SENSOR AKA DPFE SENSOR.  THE CODE TRIPPED WAS EGR INSUFFICIENT AIR FLOW. I KNOW THE SERVICE ENGINE LITE WILL GO OUT IF I DISCONNECT THE BATTERY FOR 5 MINUTES,  BUT IS THAT SUFFICIENT.   OR SHOULD IT BE TURNED OFF BY THE DEALER AND HIS OBD SCANNER.    THANKS.     I AM TRYING TO AVOID THE DEALER AND SAVE A FEW BUCKS. 1996 FORD TAURUS 3.0 DURATEC 24 VALVE ENGINE.

Answer
John-

Well...the computer should always be reset after a repair that tripped the check engine light.  That can be done with a scanner or by disconnecting the battery.  Some parts stores actually offer free code scanning these days.  I know Autozone does...perhaps others do too.  It's a great alternative to $60 at a shop/dealership.  Hope this helps.
