Honda Repair: 97 civic, adequate pressure, check fuel

Question
I tryed to start it up today and it turned over but it wouldn't start. the previous owner told me to put in run and let the fuel pump run for a few seconds, I tryed this and it didn't work. It was cold and wet this morning I don't know if that had any affect on it. What do you think I should do?

Answer
Alan, way too many variables going on in this situation. It takes 3 things to start your car; ignition/spark, fuel, air/timing, thats it. If you are missing any of these essential components then your vehicle will not fire up. (The weather will have no effect on whteher your car starts or not.)

First, check for fuel in your vehicle. Listen for fuel pump to activate, key 'on', key 'off', etc.

Second, look at the lights on the dash. Any check engine codes? Any check engine codes in your past lately? Any major repairs?

Now, are you mechanically inclined? If not, take vehicle to a repair shop.

If so, check the distributor cap and remove it. Have someone turn the engine over while you observe the rotor spinning. If not spinning you have a broken timing belt. If spinning then you have timing/air.

Check for fuel source. Double check fuel pump to see if it is still working. Make sure you have fuel to the rail and adequate pressure. If you have all of these things evaluate the check engine codes. If your car is a M/T try pop starting the car just make sure you can get it back in the driveway if it doesn't fire up. Other than these suggestions i have made for you i will need more information from you in order to guide you in the next direction.
