Honda Repair: Blown Head Gasket, blown head gasket, honda crv

Question
I have a Honda CRV 2003 with 69,500 miles.  A few days ago I noticed the engine light coming on; then the air conditioning started failing intermittently.  Finally it started losing power but after it cooled down, it worked fine.  When it failed to start altogether, I took it to the dealer.  They told me that I had a blown head gasket and that it would cost a couple of thousand dollars to repair if it is not covered by the warranty.

Does this seem excessive?  Could I get it repaired somewhere else cheaper?

Answer
No it doesn't seem excessive but I have never seen that myself.  With the year and mileage, I would be calling and placing a complaint with American Honda customer service.  That should not have happened especially at that mileage.  You may luck out and they will pay for the repair or at least help.  Start by going over the dealership especially if they are not being very helpful.
