Honda Repair: carb, co emissions, carburator

Question
This is before your time but;

I have a 1985 Honda Accord with a carburator, not fuel injection (changeover year?).  CO emissions are too high to pass state limits.  Burns a little oil between changes but not enough to require adding any.  It has been suggested that the carb should be replaced to help these emissions.  Is this the most likely problem?  If not, what do you think is most likely the cause.

Answer
Steve,

I would not replace your carburator. That most likley will not fix it. You will be wasting your money. A more realistic approach would be to make some checks to other systems, and be sure they are working properly.
Check the vaccum advance. Does it leak? Check the advance weights in the disturbitor. Are they siezed up? Check the choke. Is it staying on when it should not be? Check the hot air door diaphram. They stick on a lot, and usually cause high NOX. Since I do not have the readings from the car, its kind of hard to guess. Also check the timing. Is it timed correctly?
These are some of the basic things to check first. Did the person who told you to replace the carb. check these things I mentioned? Replacing the carb. would be one of the last things I did.
Good luck,
