Honda Repair: 87 Honda Accord lx stalls out, tacometer, honda accord

Question
Our car keeps stalling out while we are driving. Sometimes we can restart it right away but for the most part we have to wait for a while. We pulled the off fuel line at the filter under the hood and there was no fuel coming when we turned the ignition on. We direct wired the fuel pump to the battery to see if it was working and it was pumping right away. We replaced the fuel cut off relay but the problem still exists. Every time after this problem the transmission won't shift properly right away, it takes 10 to 15 minutes to shift from low gear. Recenlty the tacometer also started to jump all over. Is there a connection?
Thanks

Answer
Alex,
A common problem with your car stalling after driving, is the fuel pump. There is a filter on the end of the fuel pump inside the gas tank. As the gas is getting pumped thru the pump, the filter collects all the debris and eventuly gas can no longer go thru the pump. The car dies, and then as it sits, the debris drops off the filter, then it restarts again. You must replace the pump in the tank.
One other possibility is the ignition coil. With your tach jumping around, it is an indication of a bad coil. The signal for the tach is generated in the coil.
What you need to do is drive the car. When it stalls out, check to see if the car is getting a spark. If not, you know its the coil. If it is sparking, its the pump.
Thanks for your question.
