Hyundai Repair: Gas tank port, hyundai accent, vent hose

Question
I have a 2002 Hyundai Accent, while attempting to put gas in the car the gas pump handle keeps shutting off. I am having to put gas in it slowly to keep it from shutting off.

Answer
This typically indicates that the tank venting system is blocked.  The fuel tank air filter could be plugged or the leak detection pump could be stuck in a position that blocks the vent.  Additionally, the on-board vapor recovery (ORVR) valve could be stuck shut.

I've also seen a car that had physical damage to the fuel tank cause this issue.  Lastly, it can also be caused by a kinked filler neck hose or vent hose.

Start with visually inspecting to make sure nothing is bent or kinked.  If okay, begin disconnecting things from the vent end of the vapor control system one-by-one.  When you've disconnected the one causing the problem, you'll again be able to fill the tank normally.  Keep in mind that once you disconnect the canister, you'll be putting a large amount of fuel vapor into the atmosphere.
