Hyundai Repair: 2002 Hyundai accent transmission, transmission control module tcm, transmission control module

Question
QUESTION: I took my wife's accent to the shop twice now because it was shifting hard into top gear and the check engine light would come on after a few times. The first time they did a reset and the second time they replaced the pulse generator. After they replaced the pulse generator they said the transmission would need to be replaced if it happened again. Well it happened again. There are no problems when she doesn't have the overdrive on so she has been driving it with the overdrive off and only to and from work on short trips. Does this sound right that the transmission needs to be replaced?

ANSWER: It certainly sounds plausible that the transmission would need to be replaced.  But it's also possible this is a much simpler issue.  I have a couple questions:

1.  What was the stored code when the check engine lamp was on?  This will help me ascertain the nature of the problem.
2.  At the time the check engine lamp was reset (or at any other time in the process), did the shop reset and relearn the adaptive values in the transmission control module (TCM)?  If the TCM learns an incorrect pressure adaptation due to a problem with a transmission component, the transmission may continue to shift improperly until the values are relearned.

QUESTION: I am unsure the answer to these questions and it has been well over a month since I took it in. It was however taken into a Hyundai dealership, can it be assumed that this was done or should I call as ask these specific questions?

Answer
It's hard to say what can be assumed as I'm familiar with the shop.  On the other hand, quizzing the dealer based on what "some guy on the internet says" isn't likely to produce the desired results.  So use your judgment what you want to ask them.  At this point, I've no basis to dispute their diagnosis.
