Question
could you tell me where do i connected a vacumn tester in an '89 excel?

It failed smog state inspection because of high hc emision. would you give some pointers as to where else to look for the cause? Thank you very much in advance.  Felix

Answer
A vacuum gauge should be attached to a vacuum port somewhere on the intake manifold.

High HC indicates that there is unburned fuel or oil.  There are numerous problems that could cause this:

-- Rich fuel mixture (carburetor problems)
-- Faulty oxygen sensor
-- Thermostat opening at too low a temperature
-- Improper valve adjustment
-- Fuel in motor oil
-- Engine mechanical issues, a few of which are below
-- Broken jet valve, allowing oil into combustion chamber
    -- Worn piston rings
    -- Worn valve guides
    -- Leaking valve stem seals
-- Faulty catalytic converter
