Hyundai Repair: Hyundai Accent, tie rod ends, cotter pins


Question
How do I replace/change my Hyundai Accent '95 models cv joints?

Answer
The instructions below presume you'll be using hand tools.

1.  Place the gear selector in park and apply the parking brake.
2.  Loosen slightly the lug nuts on both front wheels.
3.  Jack the front of the car and support under the pinch weld on the body with suitable jack stands.
4.  Remove the front lug nuts.
5.  Remove the front wheels.
6.  Remove the cotter pins from the axle nuts and tie rod end nuts.
7.  Remove the tie rod end nuts.
8.  Disconnect the tie rod ends from the steering knuckles.  You may need to use a large hammer to break the tie rod ends loose from the knuckles.
9.  Remove the axle nuts.
10.  Remove the bolts attaching the struts to the knuckles.  
11.  Remove the outer cv joints from the knuckles.
`2.  Place a drain pan under the transmission to catch fluid that may come out.
13.  Pry the axles out of the transmission.
14.  Snap the new axles into the transmission.  Be sure the snap rings securely attach the axles.
15.  Reinstall the knuckles onto the outer cv joints.
16.  Reattach the knuckles to the struts.
17.  Reattach the tie rod ends to the knuckles and install new cotter pins in the nuts.
18.  Install the axle nuts and install new cotter pins.
19.  If equipped with a manual transmission, replenish the gear oil to the proper level.
20.  Remove the drain pan.
21.  Reinstall the wheels and tighten the lug nuts.
22.  Remove the jack stands and lower the vehicle to the ground.
23.  Tighten the lug nuts.
24.  If automatic, replenish the transmission fluid to proper level.
