Hyundai Repair: engine clanking, auto body shop, hyundai tiburon

Question
Had my sons hyundai tiburon repaired by auto body shop because he hit a deer.  When we went to pick it up it made a loud clanking noise when the engine was running. This noise was not there before we left it off.  They had to do some stuff under the hood with the radiator to readjust it.  My husband thought maybe the oil was low.  He checked the oil and it had water running down the dipstick.  The oil was full though.  We asked where the water came from and the guy said they had power washed the engine compartment, which we didnt ask for done.  Would them doing the washing of the engine mess up something inside if water got into a compartment to make the clanking sound?

Answer
Most likely, some part of the body was pushed into a moving component on the engine during the collision.  If the noise went away after the readjustments, that's evidence that it was indeed something simply pushed into a moving component.

The significance of the water on the dipstick will depend on where it was.  If it was on the metal portion of the dipstick, you should change your oil.  Even a small amount of water in the oil can cause engine damage.  The chances fo this occurring without driving the car for a significant distance are close to zero, however.  If the water was on the plastic handle of the dipstick, then it's of no consequence.

When a body shop performs work on your vehicle, a large amount of dust will accumulate.  Cleaning the vehicle is part of the repair job.  Even though you didn't request it, a good body shop will clean anything that's become dusty.
