Audi Repair: electrical, a6 quattro, indicator lamp

Question
I have a 2000 A6 quattro, a light has just come on.  First, the car has been riding rough.  It rides like it is stuck in first gear but it's not.  Back to the light, it looks like the alternator light but when I checked the manual it stated that it was the malfunction indicator lamp.  I'm not sure what that is can you give me some guidance.

Answer
If it is the malfunction indicator lamp, then the easiest thing to do is to go to an advanced auto or import car specialist and get the computer error codes read out, they typically do this for free.  If you are on good terms with your dealer, they also sometimes do this for free, however usually they charge for reading out codes.  This will help you find what the problem is.  Let me know what they say,  Jan
