Hyundai Repair: engine management light, fuel management system, transmission control module

Question
The engine management lifgt has been illuminated on my Accent 1.3 2001 model for a few months. I recentley had a full exhaust system fitted thinking this would solve the problem. After the new exhaust was fitted I disconnected the battery and the light went out for a day them came back on. Any ideas?

Answer
The check engine lamp can come on for a host of different reasons.  The lamp simply indicates that the engine or transmission computer has detected something that is abnormal.

You'll need to start by reading the stored diagnostic trouble codes in the engine control module (ECM) and, if automatic, the transmission control module (TCM).  This will identify the nature of the problem.  Presuming your management system is similar to that in the U.S., you'll either need a code reader to do this, or you'll need to take the car to a shop that will read the codes.

If at a shop, either have the shop diagnose the cause of the codes, or follow up with them here.  If you follow up with the trouble codes here, I can tell you what they indicate if your fuel management system is similar to that of U.S. vehicles.  But since the 1.3 isn't used in the U.S. and I have no experience with that engine in particular, I may be limited in the advice I can give.
