Hyundai Repair: 2001 Hyundai Sonata, crankshaft sensor, hyundai sonata

Question
I own a 2001 Hyundai Sonata (4 Cylinder). It's got 60,000 miles on it. A couple months ago the timing belt broke as I was starting the engine. I had the timing belt and water pump replaced. The car was running fine until yesterday. When I started the car it began making a funny "engine" noise. I figured I'd drive it over to a mechanic, but the car stalled as I began to drive and then ultimately shut down. I tried turing it back on, but it wouldn't start. The panel lights (i.e check engine, brake, oil) illuminate when I try to turn the car on and I can hear the engine trying to start, but it won't fire up. Could it be the time belt again? Someone told me it could be the crankshaft sensor. If it is the crankshaft sensor, how much will I have to shell out to replace it? Please help.

Answer
It could be the timing belt again (hopefully warrantable) or the crank sensor, or a number of other possible causes.  There are so many things that will make an engine not run, so some diagnosis will be necessary to determine necessary repairs and cost.

Pricing for repair jobs varies greatly by the shop where the work is done, the supplier and manufacturer of the parts used, and geographic location.  To get a rough idea on the crankshaft sensor, you'll probably pay about an hour's labor less than you paid for the timing belt and water pump, since the disassembly required will be very similar to the previous work.  Then I'd say add about $150 as a rough estimate for the part.  But remember, we're making very rough estimates here.
