Hyundai Repair: Hyundai Lantra 1998 2.0, hyundai lantra, clutch release

Question
Hi, my clutch has just gone, it was screetching before, then I felt a snap when I depressed the clutch, now the clutch doesn't go down fully to the footwell.  I can't change gear or start the car as the clutch needs to be fully pressed in on this model to start.  Could it be a bearing or does it sound more costly?
Regards
John

Answer
What you describe here would be consistent with a failed throwout bearing.  As it began to wear, it started screeching.  Eventually, as it wore too much, it pulled out of the pressure plate.  That would cause your clutch release cylinder to be extended, resulting in your being unable to depress the clutch pedal.

Whether the problem is what I've described above or something else, it's pretty much a certainty that the transmission will need to be removed for repair.
