Hyundai Repair: check engine light, hyundai santa fe, speed sensor

Question
I have a 2001 Hyundai Santa Fe with 21000 miles on it. Its a V6 2.7 with an automatic transmission. I bought it brand new in May of 2001. On my way to work yesterday the check engine light came on and it felt like I had very little power. I made it to work and after reading my owners manual I got out and tightened the gas cap as it said this could cause a problem. After working my eight hour shift I came out and started my car drove home and the light did not come on. My son has a OBDII reader and he came over and read the codes it displayed a 1529 and a 715. I called the dealership and explained to them the situation and they said if it comes back on to bring it in. I am leary of it and am worried I will get stranded some place. I believe I am just past my warranty by a month which really bums me out. What are your suggestions? Should I take it in, drive it and see what happens or what? Thank you for your time.

Answer
It's not something you should wait on. The P0715 code is an input speed sensor, the P1529 is a check engine light request and a "Fail Safe" code. A fail safe condition holds 3rd gear until you turn off and restart the car. That is why you felt you hsd a lack of power, the car was stuck in 3rd gear. If it continues it will do internal damage to the trans. Some Santa Fe's require removal of the trans mount to replace that sensor so I would suggest you have it done at the dealer ASAP.
Hope this helps
