Jaguar Repair: 1984 XJ6 1984, british car repair, jaguar repairs

Question
Hi,

I am not driving my Jaguar because....I was told that the sound that seems to coming from the rear end is bearings? What if this is possible for you to describe "sound" could sound like, I am told this expensive (what isn't on Jaguar repairs) and if this is the problem would it be a good idea to replace the rear brakes? I love my car that I fear to drive.

Thank you,
Julie

Answer
Hi Julie,

You need to put the car up on a lift and have someone run the car in gear and listen to try to pin point where the noise is coming from. There are a lot of things that can sound like a bearing. Any good mechanic can pin point where the noise is coming from. Then I can tell you roughly what is to be done and how they must do it.

Don't let just any mechanic check it out because the car is very different then domestic cars. Almost every major city in the US have independent Jaguar/British car repair shops. So you are not forced to go to the dealership. Not that the dealer wouldn't do a good job but their labor rates are set up for late model Jaguars and that is expensive.
