Jaguar Repair: air flow meter, air flow meter, resistor pack

Question
QUESTION: 85 xj6 blower moter workf fine  on all speeds  dont work on low check resister in hehter box behine gloxe box dont have no fire their whatels should i do.

ANSWER: Hi James,
The relay pack (lower left side of console) controls the power to the different sections of the resistor pack. You need a wiring diagram to trace each circuit. If You don't have one let me know and I will put one up on my web site for you to copy.

QUESTION: mr howard ho can u// adjust the air flo metet to increst fuel milage. i only get 200 miles on one tank is that good or bad which way would i turn adj// screw to lean in or out on 85 xj6 jaguare

Answer
Hi James,
There is a adjustment screw on the airflow meter but it is only for idle adjustment.

Adjusting the fuel mixture for highway speeds will not get you any better fuel mileage unless it is wrong to start with and there is no mixture adjustment for cruse speed. The ONLY thing that will get you fuel mileage is horse power and have the whole car correct.

The way to do that is, first measure your fuel mileage (MPG) (not miles per tank of an unknown number of gallons) If you are getting 19 to 21 miles per gallon on the expressway (not a lot of hills) and about 14 to 16 around town driving you are wasting you time trying to get better by adjusting things.

The XJ-6 is a large very heavy car and if you are worried about fuel mileage you need a different car.

You can get to the above figures by setting the ignition timing to specs, clean or replace the spark plugs, clean or replace the air filter, keep about 32 PSI air in your tires (very important to fuel mileage) and drive as though you have an egg between your foot and the gas pedal.

I have tested many cars over the years for low fuel mileage and most were due to bad driving habits, low tire pressure and a misconception of what the car was able to get in MPG. Only a few were due to tuning.

What was your HC and CO readings on your last emission test? One tank can only hold 12.6 US gallons of fuel and you can't use all of that. so if you could use 12 gallons (unlikely) and you got 200 miles then you got about 16+ MPG which is good for every day driving. If you go on a trip on expressway driving and are not a lead foot and don't hit many hills, you should see about 19 to 21 MPG.

I did extensive accurate fuel tests in 1967 of the "E" type Jaguar and found it got 28 to 29 MPG at 70 MPH (well tuned and hard tires with a flat straight highway)

The XJ-6 is a inline 4.2 engine w/ fuel injection at 4,979 lbs.
The E-type is a inline 4.2 engine w/ 3 SU carbs at 2,744 lbs.
Does that tell you anything?
