Jeep Repair: lifters on 4.0 liter, cam lobes, rod bearings

Question
1995 jeep cherokee 4.0 liter.knoking, how do i adjust the lifters?moter has 123,000 on it,could it be something deper than the lifters?

Answer
The lifters ride down on the camshaft inside the block.  The cam lobes push up the lifters which move pushrods.  On the other end of the pushrods they contact the rocker arm.  IF there were to be any adjustment then that would be the point and not the lifters themselves.

However, there's no longer any adjustments on the lifters in most newer vehicles including yours.  You may have one of the following:
Worn out lifter causing a tick
Worn wrist pins (piston to connecting rod pin)
Worn rod or main bearings.

If it's either of the first two then I would tell you "Hey, it's a 4.0L, the only thing more dependable despite engine noise would be a slant six."  I wouldn't mess with the first two.  The 4.0L's actually came with different size cylinders on the same block (notated by different letters written in white or yellow paint on the passenger side of the block) for a number of years.  They were noisy engines but very few actually failed due to this discrepency.

If it's main or rod bearings then expect a short block rebuild/replacement in short order.

I'd recomend having a mechanic listen to the noise and determine if it's bearing or just factory installed slop.
