Land Rover Repair: timing problem, discovery workshop, cam sensor

Question
QUESTION: hello,

I have a 96 Discovery. The truck was running great and then one morning I could not get it to turn over. I replaced the plugs and wires and now it will start but the engine is all out of tempo and when it warms up the engine dies. Do you have any suggestions for me?

Thank you,

Cheyne

ANSWER: There are two questions:

1) When the truck originally stopped running, was the problem plugs and wires?
2) Did you install the replacement wires correctly.

The first thing I would do is check to determine you have the wires on right.  To do that, you will need a 1996 Discovery workshop manual which has a picture of the coil assembly showing the plug wire routing.  I know you can find that picture on Google, too.

Once that is sorted out, does it start?  If the answer is no, then I would guess that the replacement of plugs and wires simply did not fix the original failure.  You need to look elsewhere, like fuel pressure, and sensor readings.  A failed crank or cam sensor will prevent starting, as will a bad fuel pump or relay.

You have to proceed step by step, and step one where you are now is verification of plug wires

QUESTION: hello,

Is the exhaust manifold on a 96 Discovery cast iron or steel? and i also got the error codes P0300 and P1314. Do you know what these are?

Thank you very much,

Cheyne

Answer
The manifold should be cast iron.

The codes you reference are for misfires.  You might have wires routed wrong, or they may have installation problems.  If the parts were replaced correctly with good parts, there is no reason for ignition misfire codes.  You could certainly look for esoteric problems but the first place I'd look is still ignition
