Land Rover Repair: 99 Discovery headlight/tail light switch, land rover discovery, turn signal switch

Question
On my 1999 Land Rover Discovery, when I turn on the headlights, the tail lights go out.  I can turn the switch one stop and have the tail lights on, or all the way and have the headlights on, but not both.  What do I have to replace, how much is it, and how do I do it?

Answer
You probably need a new head light switch, which is integrated with the turn signal switch.  Switches range in price from $200-300, and they take an hour or two to install.  If you choose to do it yourself remember to turn the key off, wait 5 minutes, then disconnect the battery.  You have to remove the airbag and steering wheel for the repair.  Make sure you do not reconnect the battery until everything is back together to avoid setting an SRS fault, which can only be cleared by a shop with the special LR test gear.
