Land Rover Repair: 1998 V8 Series 1 ABS problem., laurentian mountains, obd ii

Question
Hi John.

Great work on this site. I've read your many threads, and my Disco seems to suffer the same problem as others, Ie, ABS light comes on sometimes and other times the ABS activates when braking at very low speeds...I live in a remote desert mining town in NW Western Australia and don't have a dealer just down the road. My disco doesn't seem to have the blue ABS diagnosis plug, but has the OBD II type plug under the steering wheel. Is there any way to diagnose the problem with this plug? I may be able to get hold a OBD reader through ebay etc so do you know where to get the codes from?

Thanks...Mark.

Answer
Hi Mark,

I understand your position...I too am far (110 kms) from the nearest LR dealership.  Instead of the desert of NW Australia, I'm in the Laurentian mountains of Quebec.

Here is the perfect site for you and your OBDII code request:  www.discoweb.org  Goto the TECH section and select the OBDII codes page.  This is an excellent resource so you should bookmark this.

Yes, most OBDII readers will read the code but I think very few can reset the ABS.  There are some diagnostic units that can reset it but the price is very high...much higher than any OBDII reader.  LAVCOMM is one that comes to mind.

Best of luck,

JohnMc
