Land Rover Repair: Land Rover Problem, vacuum leaks, lighting problem

Question
I have 2 problems that are bothering me with my 2003 Discovery and hope you might have some advice. The first is perhaps some kind of electrical short, when I depress my brake pedal the rear brake light does not come on (not a bulb have replaced it already), Additionally, when I depress it at night with my lights on, the left one illuminates additionally bright correctly, but in the case of the right one, not only does the brake light not come on, it turns off the rear running light so I have no lights whatsoever on the right hand side??

Secondly, in really cold weather, my rover starts and cannot hold its rpm's and drops so low that I don't have enough to drive. Then sporadically I get power on and off until the vehicle is sufficiently warm which can take a few minutes. Could this be some kind of cold start sensor or valve problem, if it even has one of them?

Answer
The lighting problem sounds like a short in the rear fixtures, possibly because the wrong bulbs are fitted somewhere.  If it's not that I'd look for wire corrosion back there (esp in the bumper area) and look for damage to the sockets.  It's not a complex circuit and the problem is almost certainly at the back of the truck.

As to the cold running problem . . . I suggest you check for vacuum leaks, and look at the live data on a LR diagnostic system

Good luck with it. Check my blog at http://robisonservice.blogspot.com and my website www.robisonservice.com for more Land Rover articles.
