Land Rover Repair: Transmission morning noise in reverse, inhibitor switch, honda engine

Question
QUESTION: I have a 1999 ROVER 623GSI, with a 16 valve Honda Engine. Last year they put a new or rebuilt Honda Engine in this car. The problem is with the transmission. Only when put in reverse, in early mornings, when the engine is cold and the RPM goes above 1000 that it makes a jolting noise.
We flushed transmission refilled with fluid and treatment yet the problem persisted. What should I do, or tell my mechanic?

ANSWER: Hi F.Natour,

I'm impressed that you got a Honda engine into the RR.  My advise is to go to www.discoweb.org and post this question there.  There is a Range Rover discussion board and you have the choice to post it there or in the Discovery board.  Either way, you may find someone else who has overcome problems like this with engine's other than the 4.0, 4.2 or 4.6.

IF it was a straight LR engine to transmission, I'd say perhaps the inhibitor switch.  I'm sure you're experienced enough to know how the tranny fluid should have looked/smelled when you replaced it.  Any discoloration or odour and chances are its the entire tranny you'd have to replace.

As ask Discoweb and see if anyone with non-LR engines to ZF trannys have any peculiar failures on the tranny side.  Perhaps the combo needs some special attention.

Best of luck,

QUESTION: hmmmm. Thank you for the prompt response. My car is not a Range Rover or a Landrover Jeep. It is a British Rover 1999.
Rover and Honda had this joint project between 1993 to 1999 where Honda supplied the engine and Rover supplied the body and shell. It is a623 GSI sedan with automatic transmission. I did not modify the car These Rovers do come with Honda engines. Thanks again please reconsider question. Fahmi

Answer
OOOPS.

er..sorry.  I had thought you were referring to the Range Rover, since this is a LAND ROVER auto repair site.  Oh, please don't call a Land Rover a Jeep.  I wouldn't call your Rover a Honda.

I took a look at the model you have - nice.  And it has a Honda engine?  Nice.  Sounds like a very interesting vehicle.  We don't have Rovers over here in N.America - at least not on a commercial scale and as far as I know.

Have you seen any fault codes (OBDII)?  Maybe you can 'retrain' the system?  Some electronic trannys have a reprogramming sequence that is required to resync shifting... Perhaps if you disconnect the negative cable from the battery and reconnect, it may recalibrate or reprogram your tranny (if its electronic).

Did you replace the filter when you changed the fluid?  Many minor problems can be rectified by replacing the fluid AND the filter.

I'd post this question on the ROVER website:

http://rover600.homecall.co.uk/index.htm

I'm sure someone there would give you a much better answer.

Found another site:  http://www.rovertech.net

Best of luck,
