Land Rover Repair: 2000 LR disco M/S lights, mass air flow meter, mass air flow

Question
My LR disco is now having the same problem that yours had in a prior post. initially it would crank but not start - then after an hour it started, but on the way home, the M/S lights as well as the D indicator by the mileage and the one by the shifter all began flashing and the truck barely made it home in limp mode with what felt like a lot of transmission slipping. what did your's turn out to be and is there anything I can do on my own to make it driveable? thanks for any help

Answer
Hi Terry,

it could be the tranny "A" clutch.

It has been said by LR that sometimes problems like this can be the result of an electrical short or a weak battery.  For your electronic transmission, this could be the case.  Have your battery inspected and tested.  Can be done for free at most Advance Auto parts shops.  PEP boys too, I've been told.

There is a Technical Service Bulletin that seems to indicate that the MAF can trigger or complicate this problem.  I'm not sure but I thought I'd mention it...

"NOTE: There may be engine fault codes logged as well as this transmission fault code. Typically the codes are P0171, P0174. Correcting the cause of these faults will prevent further occurrences of the transmission code. However, it has also become clear that a mass air flow meter can provoke this transmission code without recording any engine fault codes. Follow LR diagnosis procedure for Mass air flow meter."

Next time you get it started, see if you have trouble using the reverse gear.  If it works well in reverse BUT terribly in the forward gears, chances are you've got some serious tranny problems and only a Testbook / Autologic to diagnose further.

Best of luck,

JohnMc
