Land Rover Repair: CV JOINT repair, flange gasket, drive flange

Question
Hi,
I've been noticing clicking/clonking noise when accelerating from idle, of when braking to full stop. Sometime when reversing from my drive way. Could this be CV joint? How do I tell which side it if from? Besides by dismantling them apart?

If I would to replace the CV joint..Do I have to lubricate it myself or it came pre-packed with the CV boot?

Thanks!
Happy holidays!

Answer
Hi Andrew,

I had to replace a CV joint a couple of years ago.  Dealer charged me $2500.

I noticed the problem when backing out of my driveway, right rear turns were worse.  It's been said:

"wear in the outer joint usually shows up as vibration at certain speeds, a bit like the vibration caused by an unbalanced wheel. To determine if the joint is worn, a driver should find a big empty car park and drive the car slowly in tight circles, left and right. Worn joints will make a rhythmic clicking or cracking noise. Wear in the inner joints shows up as a "clunk" or "pop" when applying power, or if severe, when lifting off the throttle."

One owner wrote this about CV repair:
<<
Starting from the outside:
Drive flange gasket 57175 (IIRC)
Stub axle gasket
Hub seal (if you don't reuse the original)

To be honest, most of us would probably use right stuff for both the stub axle and the drive flange.

You probably won't need to replace the stub axle seal or bearing.

Not sure about repacking (lub) and the CV joint.  If you need the actual worksheet on this, send me an email and I'll reply with a copy.  Model and year would help.

Best of luck and Happy Holidays too!
