Land Rover Repair: Shift Lever, land rover discovery, brake light switch

Question
I have 1995 Land Rover Discovery. I have a problem with starting the vehicle. I had recent rebuilt my power steering pump and once it was completed and placed back on the vehicle the vehicle would not start. An additional problem arose; not being able to shift the vehicle out of park. I had to tow the vehicle to another location and I disconnected the shift cable from the transmission and manually shifted the lever to neutral underneath. Is there an electrical safety switch to the shift box that would prevent a shift from park and in turn keep the vehicle from starting.Nothing happens except a single click under the glove box.  Help spring break is starting and I need 4w to cruze the beaches.

Answer
The vehicle is held in park until the brake is pressed with the key on.  The brake light switch also operates a solenoid that releases the shift interlock.  If you can't shift out of park, your brake lamps probably don't work either.

Check the switch, wiring, and fuses.  The switch is above the brake pedal.
