Land Rover Repair: EAS Fault...AGAIN!!, bump stops, air tank

Question
Dennis,

I had another EAS fault today, but it was a lot different than usual.  Last year, I got taken down to the bump stops, and a mechanic replaced the two front springs, that were dry rotted.  That time, it went into "Slow:35 MPH Max".  A month ago, I noticed that in the mornings, the rover always lowered itself to access mode, and then took quite a while to inflate to normal (sometimes 15-20 minutes).  I took it into the mechanic, and he said that the O rings in the collet (sp?) were bad, replaced them, and took it to Land Rover to get the faults cleared.  It worked fine for a couple of weeks.

This week, I noticed it doing the same routine, or letting itself down in the morning, and taking a while to raise back up.  The back pops up quickly, but the front really struggles.  We took some bubble testing solution and noticed a slow leak from the hoses down to each front bag...but it was barely anything.  We tightened those connections and thought we had fixed it.

This morning, the rear popped up as usual, and while the front was slowly inflating, I got an EAS fault come across the dash, but it didn't deflate and go into crawl mode.  It kept all the bags inflated where they were, so it was a little different than usual?

Does this sound like a height sensor?  Need new Collets? New compressor? Leaking Tank?

Sorry for the length of the email, but I thought the more information of what was happening would help you recognize what might be going on.

Thanks a ton,

Adam

I appreciate all the information, the more the better (although I don't really care what you had for breakfast...)

The lowering down is most likely from a leak, a slow leak will let that corner down overnight.  When you start up (or when it decides to wake up and level) it will lower the other 3 to that height then will have to raise back up to normal.  A RR with a full air tank should come up in a few seconds.  Taking 15 minutes to raise means the tank is leaking down along with the springs.

Sometimes the springs leaking down will cause the tank to empty, I haven't figured out why yet but it's internal to the block.  An block rebuild will cure that.

You definitely need to rebuild the compressor, and probably the valve block.

Did you replace the rear airsprings as well?  If the fronts went bad the rears are probably close.
