Land Rover Repair: 2004 security system, t4 test, engine controllers

Question
I bought a 2004 Range Rover that was a stolen recovery. We had to replace the key, key switch mechanism, and the transponder coil. We installed them and the key still will not work, it will not turn (it did turn the cylinder before the cylinder before it was inserted into the rest of the assembly, the dealer said that it is the right key as per vin). What should we do know, or where should we start? It seems that the dealership doesn't know what to do, they say they've never replaced the ignition mechanism, huh????? Hope you can help. Thank you

Answer
First of all, the car is not going to start with the new parts until you use the T4 test system to align the EWS and engine controllers.  If the assembled key does nothing there is either a problem with how you assembled it or the EWS is not recognizing the key signal and not authorizing the system.  That could be because it is not electronically aligned or because it is not working right.  You can't tell which without the tester.

It sounds like the dealer near you does not know how to cope with the situation.  You may have to take the car farther away to find a dealer or shop who has experience in this sort of work.

I should also caution you that this can become a bigger deal . . . our own service department fixes things like this regularly, and I've seen situations where we end up replacing the engine controller and the EWS because both can only be coded for security one time.  And if you do not have a T4 or Autologic, you are wasting your time trying to make the car start.
