Land Rover Repair: Discovery series I or II????, mitsubishi montero, discovery series

Hello, my name is Jason and i am currently on the market for a used LR discovery. I like both the series I and II and would be interested in either assuming it was in good condition with relatively low mileage. I have owned a 1995 mitsubishi montero since 2001 and have really enjoyed this vehicle. Much like the dicovery the older monteros tend to stand out in a crowd of increasingly car-like suvs. Anyway, i have been hearing a lot about how discoverys are expensive to maintain and have frequent problems. I also heard they are only suppose to be fed premium gas? So i guess my questions are 1, do you recommend series I or II. 2. Do you have to use premium gas and what happens if you dont? 3. Would maintenance be a lot more than my montero? 4 any other things i should consider. Thanks for your help. Jason J  Cleveland OH

The Discovery II is quite an improvement over the Discovery I.  I recommend the newer truck.

If you don't use premium there is a chance you will develop engine trouble so I suggest sticking with the factory recommendation.

Maintenance may be more than a Montero; I don't know much about Monteros to compare.
