Land Rover Repair: 1991 rangie classic cooling, coolant loss, head gasket

Question
Thanks in advance. Short of it 1991 rr classic 3.9 w/airco. Quite familiar with v8 mechanics new to lr/rr. Coolant loss, no overheating, bubbles in radiator vapor as well but not with  an exhaust smell. No obvious hose or engine/waterpump leaks. Exhaust is wet and steamy(smelling heavily of fuel not coolant but could be masked)....not at startup but shortly thereafter continuing heavily until running temp is achieved then tapering off to nil. No tapping(or noise) in Lower (or upper) regions of the motor at any time or rpm.
We have our suspicions (and paranoias) about what could be causing this so I figured I'd ask around....thanx for any experiences or advice you can give....living in w.europe so do-it-yourself is a little difficult and as said new to rangies but expected the work. thanx :)

Answer
You probably have a failed head gasket or a slipped liner in the engine block.  You might want to read the magazine article reprints on my web site about overheating diagnosis and slipped liners.
