Land Rover Repair: Disco II key fob code lost, t4 test, key fobs

Question
We are down to one key fob for our Discovery II (99) and we do not have the code tags that came with the orginal key fobs as we bought it second hand.

Is there anything we can do or will we have to replace entire ECU for a new key? I thought an ECU system could be decoded at a dealership and new fobs programmed to match? Our local dealership says no but their advice has been incorrect in the past with our 93 discovery ECU so we do not trust their opinion.  Thank you in advance for your much appreciated reply. Jennifer

Answer
The dealer's T4 test system can identify which of the keys listed in the ECU memory is still in your posession.  It can tell which key you've got.  Having done that, it's a simple matter to program a second key.

** Make sure they take the step of identifying the key that you currently have.  They way they do that is to watch the "active key data" screen on the t4 while pushing the button on the key.  The key in use will change on the screen, allowing the tech to identify it. ***

Just so you know, the key is in two pieces.  The metal key snaps into the plastic part that has the buttons.  The plastic part is called the fob or PLIP.

Make sure you have them write down the PLIP numbers when they add the new key

Good luck,
