Land Rover Repair: 98 discover - remote programming, key fobs, flash 8

Question
Thank you very much, John.

My Discovery is a North American Model (I'm in Canada), and the fobs each have two buttons.  I'll give this procedure a try and let you know if it works or not.

Jon.

Hi,

One of my 2 remotes for my 98 Discovery does not function, so I've replaced the battery in it, but still no luck.  The LR dealer's mechanic said that they could re-program it.  It's a fair distance from my home, so do you know if there is a procedure that I can follow to re-program it myself?

Hi Jon,

I believe only the dealer can reprogram your key fobs.  I have the reprogramming sequence for single button key fobs:

Note: Must be carried out in 8 seconds to access learn mode. Best done with two people. You should have both remotes available or second one will not work.

Open hood and have assistant hold hood alarm switch down.

From inside car, with all doors closed, ignition off and all lock buttons up

Turn ignition on then off

Cycle drivers door button down then up.

Assistant now releases hood switch.

Turn ignition on then off.

If done correctly, horn will beep once and dash LED will light up. This indicates the learn mode has been accessed. If this doesn't happen repeat 1 through 6.

From inside car, push and hold first remote. The dash LED should flash 8 cycles a second for one second indicating that the code was received. If this does not happen repeat steps 1 through 6 again.

Push and hold the second remote, if the code is received the dash LED will flash 8 cycles indicating that the code was received. If this does not happen repeat 1 through 8 again.

Note: Turning the ignition on at any time will cancel the learning process. The system can only store two remote codes and must be done at the same time. If you only have one remote program it twice.

Answer
Hi Jon,

I too live in Canada (Laurentians of Quebec).  I always answer with NAS vehicles in minds unless I know the Q is from a non-NAS vehicle owner.

I doubt the one button fob programming will work with your two-button fob.  You'll have to walk into the dealer and have them reprogram your Disco.  ouch.

It was so simple with the '95 Disco but I guess LR wants to scratch a few more dollars from us.

Regards,

JohnMc
