Land Rover Repair: 2000 Discovery II Overheating, coolant leaks, coolant tank

Question
Purchased a 2000 Discovery II last December from an individual.  No problems until two weeks ago. It stopped on the hwy.  Had that repaired.  Something had broken loose. A week after getting the veh back, it overheated while driving less than 12 miles. Smoke coming from underneath hood and from exhaust.  Thermostat went to red. Checked it today after it cooled and put in mixture of Anti-freeze and water. Noticed that it was leaking out - a steady stream. What could the problem be? Is this a problem with the radiator, the coolant tank or the engine?

Answer
First - if there is steam coming out the exhaust you probably have internal engine damage.

Second - if the coolant leaks from the engine in a steady stream you've got to locate and fix the leak.

The aluminum engines in Land Rovers are easily damaged by overheating.  If you drove with the temp gauge in the red and smoke there's a good change you did the motor serious harm.  Don't ever drive a car anywhere when the temp gauge shoots up.
