Land Rover Repair: BRAKES AND RADIATOR, brake pads and rotors, abs brakes

Question
HI-
I'M HAVING SOME PROBLEMS WITH MY 1998 DISCOVERY. LAST WEEK I HAD A RADIATOR FLUSH BECAUSE IT WAS OVERHEATING. NOW I NOTICE WHEN I'M STUCK IN TRAFFIC (AND I LIVE IN HOT LAS VEAGAS) IT SHOOTS UP TO RED. I DROVE THE LAST 3 MILES TO MY HOME WITH IT IN THE RED AND I WAS PANICKED. I HAVE READ WHAT YOU SAID ABOUT THE SLEEVES FAILING AND THE ENGINE GOING.  WHEN I LIFT UP THE HOOD, THE COOLANT IS BOILING OUT OF A SMALL SLIT ON THE SIDE OF THE OVERFLOW TANK. I HAD THE THERMOSTAT CHANGED LAST SUMMER. WHAT DO YOU THINK IS MAKING IT OVERHEAT?

THE OTHER PROBLEM I'M HAVING IS THAT MY BRAKES ONLY WORK PROPERLY WHEN THE ABS LIGHT IS ON. IF IT'S NOT ON, MY BRAKES VIBRATE AND MAKE A "BOING" SOUND WHEN I PUSH ON THEM. THEY BARELY WORK. I HAD BRAKE PADS AND ROTORS PUT ON LAST SEPTEMBER.  I AM SOOO AFRAID TO TAKE MY CAR IN BECAUSE I'M AFRAID OF HOW MUCH IT'S GOING TO COST ME.

CAN YOU GIVE ME AN EDUCATED GUESS ABOUT WHAT YOU THINK ALL THIS IS?   THANKS SO MUCH!

JAMI

Answer
As I've said in my articles, driving 3 miles with the temp gauge in the red is enough to cook the motor.

It sounds like you've got coolant coming from a split in the expansion tank.  I'd suggest you tow it to a repair facility and find out what else is wrong.

Without seeing your car I have no idea what's wrong but my recent article in the Rover News that you refer to has plenty of testing suggestions.

You'll need to find a shop with the t4 or Rovacomm orAutologic test system to check the ABS brakes.  There is no way to do that at home.
