Land Rover Repair: Discovery Radio, land rover north, flathead screwdriver

Question
My radio stopped working and now it just says code when I turn it on.  I have no code.  I called the dealer here, in Guam, and they offered no help saying I would have to get a new radio if I didn't know the code.  Is there any way to override this or get it fixed before I go insane from not having a radio?  Thank you for your help.

Answer
Hi Jackie,

there is no way to override the code on your radio. You have to get the code from LandRover HQ.  While you are talking to them, mention that your local LR dealer was unwilling to assist you.

Most reputable LR dealers can retrieve the code for you.  Once you've demonstrated proper ownership, the dealers have ways of extracting the code.

For every LR, a white credit card, the "Code card", is issued and is usually found with the owner's manual. Some dealerships write the code on a piece of tape or label and may place it in a 'safe area:  one side of the glove box, on the bottom of the ash tray, or in one of the door jams. Check the owners manual, the code may be written in on the stereo pages, one of the covers or other pages by the previous owner. On rare occasions, the code may be written on the stereo but you'd have to remove the stereo to verify this (strange place to put it but its possible).

There is a company that I am aware of that can retrieve the code but they'll charge you AND you will have to do some of the work.  They probably contact the original manufacturer (Clarion or BOSE) and get the code from them.  I think this is what LR would do as well.

Regardless, you'll need to provide your VIN#, car stereo Model, Reference and Serial numbers from car stereo.  LandRover will verify that you are indeed the owner while this service (FCSR) I'm not sure.

Its possible that you will have to remove the car stereo for these numbers.  A small jewelers flathead screwdriver is usually the tool to remove the stereo.  Be careful not to strip the head of the tiny screw.

NB: there is a known problem with some radios in that they no longer hold the security code.  I'm not aware of the fix but I've heard that it can happen.  In this case, most likely the radio has to be replaced.  I hope this is not the case with yours.  You'll find out soon enough once you have the code.
