Land Rover Repair: Vibration from gear lever, vibration problem, consumer protection agency

Question
Freelander TD4 stationwagon 2 years old. Vibration and really anoying noise from gear lever at 1225 rpm. It almost disappears if the lever is held tight. Just had the car serviced costing £406 and I asked for the problem to be investigated under warranty but the dealer was not interested because there is no mechanical problem.

Hi Derrick,

any word from LandRover about your Freelander vibration problem?

Almost every mechanic knows that if the shifter is vibrating its most likely engine related.  The engine is the source of the vibrations and it should be investigated BEFORE the warranty expires and you get stuck with the bill.

Best of luck,

Hi Derrick,

that's alot of bulls--t fro your dealer.  If they wait until you are no longer under warranty, they can 'nail' you with a service charge to fix it.

I would escalate this problem to LR head office and have them force the dealership to fix it.  They could not have sold the vehicle with this problem SO why does the dealership ignore it now?

Raise your voice to the dealership owner, Land Rover Customer Complaints (head office) and then any consumer protection agency your country provides you.  It is a mechanical problem, just one that the dealer does not want to pay for to fix.   The dealer would gladly repair this if you said you'd pay the bill.  It should be covered under your warranty as part of the drivetrain system and you can successfully argue this if you are angry enough.

My worry would be that once the warranty is over, the underlying problem will surface and it becomes a gearbox problem that requires much more than a simple adjustment.  Of course, by this time YOU will have to pay for the repair.  I've seen this before.

Best of luck,
