Land Rover Repair: land rover discovery, land rover discovery, diff lock

Question
diff lock indicator switch, the location of it?

i recently purchased this disco and i am having just a few probs with it, this one being the diff lock warning light is not coming on when its engaged, i know the light works and the diffs are locking i have done all those test and last weekend while looking at oil leak i saw two wire hanging down one of which had the remains of a terminal in it, tracing them back they joined the main loom with 2 other wires with i found to be the reverse light wires, i shorted out the wires i had found hanging down and hey presto on comes the diff lock light but know where can i see of feel the remains of the switch any ideas where it is?

Answer
Hi Martin,

very difficult to know that from where I'm sitting.  The diff lock warning light switch must be up on top of the diff.  I have a manual transmission and the gearbox may be different from yours (do you have an automatic?)

Looking at some notes I have, if you go thru the top, inside your Disco, you'd have to remove some bolts and rivets.  I'm not sure you'd be able to see the terminals from inside the vehicle.

It must be very tight trying to feel around the top of the diff FROM underneath.  You'll have to feel around to see if the remnants of that terminal are still attached to the switch.  I thinks its on top near the transmission tunnel and closer to the parking brake housing.

Of course, it would be easier if you drop your diff and then you'll have plenty of room to locate the shiftlock solenoid and neutral switch area.

Looking at the diagram I have, it appears to be located behind the gearbox shifter and to the right a few inches.  There should be two leads, one goes to the switch the other goes to a solenoid.

Maybe if you feel around for the other lead on the diff, you can find the remaining switch.

Best of luck,

Send me an email and I'll send you a copy of the diagrams I have on your diff.  jmcinnis64@hotmail.com
