Land Rover Repair: Freelander Boot door will not open, range rover owners, door latch

Question
The rear window will not operate to allow me to open my boot door (english). The central locking seems to be working but when I try to open the door the window does not retract the 2" (approx) to allow the door to be opened. The button on the dash also does not operate the window.

It seems that the window motor is not working, if this is the case how do I, firstly prove this and secondly what is the method for replacing it if this is the case.

Please advise

Paul,
Here's what a fellow Freelander owner had to say about your problem:

"Does the window try and retract (i.e. makes a motor noise) or is it completely dead?

When you press in the rear door latch do you get a "click" from the latch to indicate it is operating, or is that dead too?

Does the window do anything when you

a) hold down the "unlock" button on the key fob or
b) put the key in the rear door lock, turn it and hold it in the turned position

I think the rear door window uses the same endless-bit-of-wire-in-a-conduit idea as the side windows, and those always break, the wire usually frays and jams or breaks, then all you get is a grinding noise from the mechanism when you try and put the window up or down.

I hate those Freelander rear windows, they are a stupid idea (especially if you want to put something in the back and it's a frosty morning...) and they let in dust something rotten too, on gravel roads. The back of my Td4 Freelander used to look like somebody had dropped a bag of flour in it after 100 odd miles on dusty roads in the summer. One of several reasons I got rid of it."

I hope this is of some help.

Hi Paul,

I am not very familiar with Freelanders, however, I see you have the same trouble with windows as Discovery and Range Rover owners.

Recently, a fellow Disco owner reported that he had trouble with a rear passenger window.  He unplugged the switch and by simply re-connecting the switch, the problem window began to operarte.  Perhaps if you could give this a try.

You could also disconnect the negative cable from your battery, wait one minute then reconnect the cable.  You'll have to reenter the security code for your LR radio.  Perhaps this will 'jar' the system enough to reestablish a link to your rear window.

The only way to prove if it is the rear window actuator OR the MFU (multi-function unit - but I could give it a better name!) that controls the windows and doors, is by removing the rear panel of the door; removing the window motor and perform a bench test.

Meanwhile, I've ask some other Freelander owners for their comments and I'll send you a followup as soon as I have a response.

Back soon,

JohnMc
