Land Rover Repair: td5 misfire, waste pipes, waste gate

Question
Hi John. I asked you in February about my td5 with misfire at 3,000rpm.I had it serviced and the fault turned out to be a sticking turbo charger waste gate modulator. It was stripped and cleaned and the associated pipes were blocked as well.
I have another problem and you are an expert on leaks. There has been a lot of heavy rain recently and I have noticed a water leak coming from the roof lining near the back door. There was also one occasion when there was a leak from the drivers side upright which houses the seat belt. Water came out of the slot where the belt comes from and is pulled across the drivers chest. The leak at the back is on the same side as this leak. I have blown out the waste pipes for the rear sunroof as they come down behind the rear light units. If I blow into them I can hear air rushing out of the other end in the sunroof unit. I have been unable to locate the front sunroof waste pipe. Perhaps you could give me some guidance? Thanks again for your help on the other misfire but you now know what the problem was. Thanks

Answer
Hi Reg,

thanks for the update on the sticking turbo waste gate.  I'll keep that info for some other owner who might have the same problem.

As for your leaking sunroof...I have manual latches, so my leaks are not the same as yours.  However another owner has this to say:

"My sunroof leaked when I bought the car (surprised?) and did not lift as it opened. I dismantled it and had a look at the inards and found the leak to be an easy fix. The seal had been torn in the corner where the drain plug was and the tear was bigger than the plug therefore more water went in than out. Simply turned the seal so that the rip was in the front centre of the sunroof : hey presto no more leak. However the lifting has me puzzled. The fault is caused by a plastic runner on either side which has grove in it. The sunroof runs down the grove without moving the runner back, thus lifting it. When it hits the end of the grove it pulls the runner with it moving the sunroof backwards. However on the 2 sunroofs I have, on three of these runners the end has broken off and therefore the sunroof simply goes back without lifting and is not able to open. It stops against the body work. I have only been able to find suppliers of entire sunroofs at £100 pounds a pop which seems a bit excessive when I want to 4" pieces of plastic."

So...this might be of interest to you if you are in the mood to do your own repairs.

As for drainage lines...it would stand to reason that everything flows front to back.  Perhaps the front Sunroof is linked to the rear sunroof.  Guessing on my part.

Anyway,  here is a website that has genuine LR service sheets for dealerships.  These tech sheets should provide you with the info you need to stop the leakage...I hope it does not cost as much as the turbo waste gate cleaning!
