Land Rover Repair: 97 disco, fog light installation, dashboard lights

Question
John,
This may sound trivial, however I am having a terrible time finding a possible fuse for my tail, parking, dash, and fog lights.  I have had an "expert" Rover tech taking care of any needs my disco has shown in recent months.  He recently installed a front brush bar & fog lights.  Yesterday I had the first chance to use the lights and all of my other lights (listed above) went out.  I cannot find a fuse for these items listed in my manual.  My headlights, brake lights, and turn indicators are the only lights still operating.  Is there a fuse, or is this something worse?  Should I continue to trust my "experienced tech", is it possible that this is simply a coincidence? or should I abandon the situation? Thank you for your help!

Answer
Hi Steph,

it would appear (pardon the pun) that the installation of the fog lights must be causing a short.  Just by the description of which lights are not working, I can tell that it is not fuse related.  Perhaps the fog light installation is incorrect.  Have your technician recheck his wires.

Did your lights work BEFORE the foglights were installed?  If so, recheck the installation.  IF NOT, you'll have to check each light and holder/wiring assembly to see if it is shorting out.  On a '97 this is quite possible...just a coincidence that it happens after foglight install?

Lights on the Disco are divided into two halfs; left side and right side are separated.  I had a sidemarker light (front RH) short out.  It caused my RH rear tail light to stop working along with the dashboard lights.  The short was inside the bulb holder.  Replaced the bulb holder/wiring and lights came back.

I am a surprised that your technician cannot find the fault.  Is he/she a LandRover technician?  If not, take your Disco to the dealer and have them fix it for you.  Should not take more than 2 hours of labour to track down the fault and repair.  Parts are another story, a sidemarker light assembly is priced at about $120, so be prepared to payout $$$ for parts.

I've been told that all the sidelights are fed from fuse F8 (10A) in the facia fusebox. However, the numberplate light and left rear sidelight are on the same feed from the fuse box (a red/orange wire) so if these are not working there could be a short/earth at the point where the feed splits.

Another thing to check could be the trailer socket, a known source of elec faults, and is fed from both sides.  If there is a short or earth on this (check the connector in the right hand tailgate door post as well as the trailer socket if fitted) it could conceivably blow the fuse for the dashboard illumination - check fuses F4 and F14.

Best of luck,

JohnMc
